The online payment system PayPal is one of the safest in the world. Fraudsters still manage to steal their money from PayPal users. But which meshes do they use? And how do you protect yourself effectively?

1. PayPal Scams: Sellers Watch Out!

More than 15 million people use PayPal in Germany alone. You benefit from simple and reliable payment, which you can make in just a few seconds. PayPal advertises with its seller and buyer protection, which protects both sides against abuse. Therefore, both contracting parties feel safe. Unfortunately, fraudsters are increasingly trying to abuse the online payment system for their own purposes. They often succeed in doing this. The buyer protection at PayPal is not comprehensive and has some loopholes. Therefore, sellers and buyers should study the exceptions carefully.

2. How Does the Scam Work?

PayPal is generally very safe. Occasionally, however, hackers still manage to spy out the login data of accounts. They always proceed in the same way:

A) You Accept Parcels

Fraudsters use hacked login data to buy goods. You can have these delivered to an address of your choice via express delivery Thanks to Deutsche Post's real-time tracking, you know exactly when the package will arrive. Usually, they order the parcel to a high-rise building and pretend to be the addressee's neighbor. You take the package and leave the building immediately.

B) You Buy Vouchers

Other fraudsters use the hacked PayPal data to buy vouchers, for example for Amazon. They sell these vouchers at auction houses like eBay and try to cover their tracks.

3. PayPal Protection: When Is It Excluded?

Sellers receive the purchase price immediately after the conclusion of a contract to their PayPal account. That's why they feel safe. The buyer asks you in a separate message to send the goods to a different address. Most sellers respond benevolently to this request. If the fraud is exposed, however, the sellers are left at their expense. PayPal books the purchase price back. The online payment system is entitled to do so. Its terms and conditions contain the following clause:

"If [...] the seller ships the item to an address other than the one specified on the" Transaction Details "page, Seller Protection does not apply".

The owner of the hacked PayPal account will be refunded the purchase amount in such a situation. The seller has violated the general terms and conditions and is therefore left with his damage. The following items of purchase are not protected:

·         Plots

·         Vehicles

·         Wagers

·         Donate

4. What Do You Have to Pay Particular Attention To?
