Microsoft launched Windows 95 with an advertising budget of $ 200 million. 45 million copies were sold in three months.
25 years ago Microsoft took Windows 95 into the competition. A $ 200
million advertising budget can ensure 45 million copies are sold in three
months. However, Windows 95 is not completely secure and stable. However,
the new look and many improvements in the operating system make working and
playing on the PC easier.
25 years later, Bill Gates still speaks of “milestones in the history of Microsoft”. “Getting Started” - The Rolling Stones shaped the sound of the Microsoft Windows 95 operating system was released 25 years ago. The company's founder, Bill Gates, earned $ 3 million to receive the right to use the song on the premiere night of television shows on August 24 and beyond.
TV star Jay Leno flew in from Los Angeles to present the
software. 2500 guests celebrated the arrival of the new software on the
company campus in Redmond near Seattle. In New York, the Empire State The building is lit up with the colors of windows at night. The industry has
never seen anything like it. Since September 5, 1995, Windows 95 has also
been officially available in this country. Microsoft began releasing
millions of CDs on July 17th. A small legal battle with the integration of
additional services into the operating system could not prevent the company
from implementing its plans.
PAST TECHNOLOGY
Windows 95 is number one worldwide. However, there are
still many old technologies: In order not to rule out the first 16-bit Windows
version of the program and the first outdated software of the Microsoft
operating system MS-DOS, Gates and his colleagues decided against a fresh
start. However, this decision also occasionally caused Windows 95 to
crash. A non-cooperative DOS or 16-bit Windows program is sufficient to hang
the PC. The new appearance is even more convincing: The Microsoft system
offers a new document-based graphic user interface.
While the desktop metaphor may sound familiar to Apple Macintosh
users, Windows 95 is actually the first for most PC users. It sparked an
upgrade boom as the new operating system looked better and more user-friendly
compared to MS-DOS and the first Windows version.
Windows 95 also places an annoying length limit on file names so that the file name exceeds the limit (eight plus three characters) (EXAMPLE.TXT). The deleted file ends up in the recycle bin and can be deleted from the recycle bin before it is permanently deleted. Microsoft resolved the conflict between the interruption of the ISA PC plug-in card and the DMA channel. At the time, this had to be set up with a mouse and piano, and an elegant method was used: with plug and play, the hardware manufacturer was on the right track.
DESIGN
Since then, Microsoft has
played an increasingly important role in regulating the rapid growth of the PC
industry: “Ready for Windows 95” is the cornerstone of many “Hardware Design
Guides”, and both Microsoft and major PC manufacturers agree on this guide in
common Standards. Agree on the hardware that future versions of Windows
will use.
At the time of the market launch, Microsoft was asking a price for the full
version of Windows 95 of around 400 DM. In fact, half of the PC hackers at the
time (like Vobis) added the operating system to the new PC. For the main
memory, 8 MB RAM is considered sufficient and should be at least 4 MB. The
operating system occupies 40 to 55 MB on the hard disk. The minimum
requirement is an 80386 processor.
Even if some users don't understand why they have to click "Start" to
click "Shut Down", Microsoft continues to place an accent on the
Start menu. In the first seven weeks alone, Microsoft sold 7 million
copies of Windows 95. Within one year, 40 million units were sold. In this
way, Gates took the PC out of the nerd's corner and took a decisive step
towards realizing his vision of “a PC on every table”.
In 1995 only 60 million good computers were sold worldwide. Ten
years later, worldwide PC sales exceeded the 200 million mark for the first
time, and Microsoft had a market share of more than 95%. The PC market
peaked in 2011 with 365 million units sold. Since then, the curve has
obviously been pointing downwards, as smartphones or tablets have replaced PC
functions for many people.
